All employees are charged with providing full support to this policy. It is the responsibility of the Dean or Director to implement and maintain this policy within their college, department, or unit. The Environmental Health and Safety Office Waste Management guidance is available at Waste Management | Environmental Health & Safety | West Virginia University (wvu.edu) or the office number is 304-293-0952

Aerosol Can Disposal Policy

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) will no longer allow aerosol cans to go into the regular trash at WVU HSC Campus buildings (this does not apply to home disposal). This includes cleaning products, disinfectants, furniture polish, canned air etc. When an aerosol can used at work becomes empty, the aerosol can will need to be dropped off at the HSC Surplus room located in G278-HSC-South for recycling.

Lecture bottles and MAPP gases are not to be taken to Surplus. They remain in the lab or shop where they are used until empty. When empty, a hazardous waste pick up can be requested at this link:

Hazardous Waste Disposal | Environmental Health & Safety | West Virginia University (wvu.edu)

Pick up will occur shortly thereafter.

Your cooperation with this mandate is required and appreciated. Failure to do so could result in your department being fined by the WVDEP. If you have questions, please contact the HSC Safety Office at 304-293-0952.
